“Let the Good Times Roll!” Happy Mardi Gras to everyone out there. Though I wasn’t born and raised in New Orleans, it is nonetheless in my spirit and definitely in my blood. I’m wearing the traditional colors of purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (wealth/power) but no King Cake as I’m cutting carbs. 😦 Ah well. Next year.
If you don’t know anything about Mardi Gras outside of the drunkenness and boob flashing and bead throwing, one of the old-line krewes (the organizations that throw their own parades, parties, etc.), The Rex Organization/School of Design, has a wonderful website that gives the history of its organization, including its significant influence on the traditions and symbols of Mardi Gras.
The celebration is much older than Christianity, and Maggie McNeill of The Honest Courtesan blog gives a fantastic history of Mardi Gras and other Carnival celebrations throughout the Latin-speaking world. Mardi Gras/Carnival is itself a demimonde complete with feasting, sensuality, and sexuality, the latter two are strong holdovers from pagan ritual. Regardless of ones religious beliefs or lack thereof, today is a great day to let loose and celebrate the end of winter and a transition into the beginning of spring, in roughly 40 days.
And now, some music!
